Embracing a Unique Build Opportunity with a Meaningful Purpose
When Valley Youth House set out to build a new multi-purpose center at Camp Fowler in Orefield, PA, they envisioned a space that could serve youth with year-round opportunities for recreation, learning, and connection. Penntex helped bring that vision to life, stepping into the project during a critical phase and guiding it through to substantial completion.
The Carter Family Center called for a wood-framed, truss structure with a residential aesthetic that blended seamlessly into the surrounding camp environment. The new building includes a full basement and was constructed with an eye toward both beauty and resilience.
Standout Features and Specifications
Architecturally inspired by the neighboring cabins, the center features a sweeping wraparound porch, full-service kitchen and pantry, and ADA-compliant site integration, including precisely aligned walkways and parking access. Inside, the building’s grand lobby rises to a 35-foot-high ceiling, accented by exposed heavy timber trusses and a full-height stone fireplace. Two bright multi-purpose rooms, framed by folding glass partitions, allow for flexible programming and community use. The facility was also designed with long-term durability and safety in mind. Constructed to be a reliable year-round gathering space that can safely accommodate both youth and staff in any weather condition.
Navigating Challenges, Prioritizing Collaboration
From site access limitations, including a tricky access drive, to building on an active camp property during summer programming, the Carter Family Center project introduced several logistical challenges. The Penntex team coordinated around bus and parent traffic, adjusted for occasional helicopter landings, and managed elevated interior work using scaffolding and an accelerated schedule to maintain momentum. Throughout the build, close collaboration with Valley Youth House leadership ensured that all donor-funded contributions were carefully tracked, documented, and integrated, demonstrating the value of transparency and teamwork at every stage.
A Build That Reflects Penntex Values
This project reflects Penntex’s ability to adapt to new construction challenges while staying grounded in the collaborative, transparent approach that defines our work. While the Carter Family Center was unlike our typical industrial or warehouse projects, our project management team brought diverse experience, including backgrounds in residential construction, that helped guide the build through every complexity.
Delivered with the same high-performance standards, safety-first mindset, and commitment to partnership found across every Penntex project, the Carter Family Center build stands as a testament to the power of true partnership. We were proud to support this meaningful effort not only as the construction management team but also as a project sponsor. With construction substantially complete and final permitting underway in summer 2025, the Carter Family Center is already beginning to serve the youth it was built for, standing as both a physical structure and a symbol of what is possible when a mission-driven vision meets skilled, purpose-driven execution.
