Freshpet Manufacturing Setup & Expansions

Penntex’s partnership with Freshpet spans two major projects—each playing a vital role in supporting the nationally recognized fresh pet food production company’s ongoing growth. The first, a $100 million renovation and expansion of an existing building, transformed 140,000 square feet into a state-of-the-art, food-grade manufacturing facility designed to meet Freshpet’s operational needs. The most recent collaboration included conversion of 20,000 square feet of dry warehouse space into a new production line and laboratory expansion to advance the company’s next phase of growth.

From Transformation to Expansion: Building for Freshpet’s Continued Growth

Creating a State-of-the-Art Manufacturing Home

Meeting Freshpet’s aggressive timeline and startup goals for the original 140,000 square-foot renovation and expansion required high-level coordination, strategic sequencing, and constant communication. Penntex utilized MEP building information modeling (BIM) to integrate complex process systems and planned carefully staged openings, allowing for specialized equipment installation throughout the construction process. To meet production-driven needs, materials and systems were thoughtfully selected, including:

  • A high-efficiency industrial ammonia refrigeration system
  • Anti-microbial, skid-resistant flooring
  • 900 tons of galvanized steel for corrosion resistance
  • 33 high-speed dock doors
  • Pop-up ceilings and walkable interstitial space to accommodate large-scale equipment and utility access

Expanding with Purpose: Advancing Manufacturing Capacity

Building on that success, Penntex was again selected to complete a 20,000-square-foot manufacturing expansion—converting dry warehouse space into a new production line and an expanded laboratory designed to further enhance operational capacity. With Freshpet’s 24/7 operations continuing nearby, meticulous planning and sequencing were essential. The Penntex team installed full-height temporary partitions to isolate work zones, coordinated construction around delivery logistics, and executed utility tie-ins during carefully timed factory shutdowns to minimize disruption and maintain productivity.

Key Project Highlights:

  • Specialized Lab Build-Out: Integrated tailored casework, utilities, and a highly complex HVAC system to support precise lab testing conditions.
  • Advanced Manufacturing Areas: Constructed three dedicated production rooms—raw processing, primary packaging, and secondary packaging—with integrated two-story equipment platforms requiring careful coordination with Freshpet’s supplier.
  • Infrastructure Enhancements: Reinforced building structure to support new rooftop refrigeration units, installed sloped slabs with epoxy flooring, and executed underground utility tie-ins in a congested subgrade environment.
